Flow Free is a deceptively simple game, but while the early levels may have you feeling pretty confident in your pipe-laying abilities, as you go further and further through the game you’ll come across ever more complex challenges. The premise is straightforward – fill up each grid with coloured piping – but in practice it’s a lot more complicated than that.Flow Free

There are a variety of iPad titles available that can give you your first-person shooter fix, but Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is one of the best at transferring a console-style experience to your tablet. The graphics are stunning, and the controls are natural to operate once you’ve got used to them (with gyroscope control available as an option). 14. Inspired by the popular 80s game of the same title, and given an updated Temple Run-style interface, Pitfall! asks you to race through a beautifully rendered jungle that has a surprise around every corner. Run, dive and jump for as long as you can, picking up treasures along the way.

Pitfall Like all of the best iPad games, Pitfall! is great to look at, easy to control and very enjoyable to play, and there’s more variety here than you’ll find in most free-running games.

15. The aim of the game in Tiny Tower is to build a skyscraper as high as you can and keep your residents (known as ‘bitizens’) as happy as possible in the meantime. Make sure there are enough jobs to go around, enough leisure activities to keep them happy and enough food to eat.Tiny Tower

16. GTA5 may have been pushed back to September, but you can get your car-jacking, police-chasing, crime-spreeing fix between now and then with Vice City for the iPad. 19. An unusual but engaging mystery adventure story where you are given special ghostly powers to go back in time and change the fate of a young woman. It can take some time to get into the swing of Ghost Trick but it rewards persistence and the story is well worth sticking around for. 20. Hundreds takes a simple concept and turns it into an engrossing game that you’ll find it difficult to pull yourself away from. Tap and hold on a dot to expand it, and once the total dot size exceeds 100, you’ve completed the level. At its centre the game is a tower defence title, so your aim is to defend your land and castles, but there’s plenty of variation and additions (such as boss fights) to keep you hooked. 29.If you’re of a certain age you’ll have spent many hours with the real physical version of Labyrinth, guiding a marble across a wooden surface, and the virtual iPad equivalent is just as much of an addictive experience. 32.Dream Of Pixels turns the standard Tetris format on its head – your blocks are drifting to the bottom of the screen, and you need to break them up before they arrive. If it sounds counter-intuitive when described, it all makes sense when you’re playing, and if you don’t want the stress of having to race against the clock then a more relaxed puzzle mode is also available.Dream Of Pixels The high quality of the graphics and the accompanying audio add to the dream-like ambience.

33.Trigger Fist is an intense first-person shooter that embraces the touchscreen format rather than trying to work against it, limiting your field of fire to the horizontal axis so you’re not waving your gun wildly in the air while your enemies shoot you down. 37.It seems appropriate that one of the icons of the first video game age should still be going strong as the tablet app era dawns. 45.One look at the visuals for Horn and you know you’re dealing with a quality iPad game (and you’ll need an iPad 2 or later to be able to run it). The eponymous Horn is a blacksmith’s apprentice and as the title character you must solve puzzles, defeat enemies and reverse the spell that has blighted the people of your village. Horn Horn seems to have more of a underlying sense of humour than some comparable titles, and from the gameplay to the scenery it’s a treat to play. A free demo version is available.

46.Take to the skies during World War II in this stunning and authentic-feeling flight combat game. By the time you’ve worked your way through the tutorials you’ll feel confident about taking on any oncoming enemy, and the level of detail in both the aeroplanes and the scenery around you really immerses you in the gameplay. 49.Your task in Little Things Forever is to find a list of objects hidden in each picture, while using as few hints as possible. The artwork itself is beautifully drawn and makes the game a pleasure to play – you might not notice the time going by, so absorbing is the gameplay.Little Things Forever There isn’t that much variety to be had here, but Little Things Forever doesn’t really need it – a gem of a game if you want to practice your powers of concentration and observation.

50.Paper Toss isn’t the most sophisticated game you’re ever going to install on your iPad, but it’s a great timewaster that requires very little mental effort.Paper Toss You’ll need to perfect your finger swipes if you’re to succeed in getting your scrunched up paper balls inside the metal litter bin, and with the ‘World Tour’ element in this latest version, you can take your bin across the globe with you without ever leaving your sofa – the better you get, the more levels you’ll unlock.

Frisbee Forever 2The game is very easy to pick up and play, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t challenging, and there are a variety of mini-games and separate missions within each level to attempt as well.
